GLP-1s And The Road
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Three cheeseburgers at the truck stop used to be just another meal. Today, ordering grilled chicken might get someone asking, “Are you on a GLP-1?” In this episode of Q&A with Trucking Ray, we explore why medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have become one of the biggest conversations in trucking.
For many CDL drivers, staying healthy isn’t as simple as making better choices. Long hours behind the wheel, inconsistent sleep, stress, and limited food options make weight management a real challenge. That’s why more drivers are looking into GLP-1 medications—not just for weight loss, but because they’re hearing about possible benefits related to blood sugar, inflammation, heart health, sleep, and overall wellness.
We separate what’s supported by current research from what’s still speculation. While studies continue to explore these medications beyond weight loss, there’s still much to learn, and it’s important not to confuse promising research with proven facts.
Most importantly, we discuss what every professional driver should consider before starting a GLP-1 medication. Your health, your DOT medical certification, and your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle should always come first. The best place to start is with a conversation between you and your healthcare provider.
At the end of the day, this episode isn’t about promoting or discouraging GLP-1 medications—it’s about encouraging truck drivers to take their health seriously. Just like preventive maintenance keeps a truck on the road, preventive healthcare can help keep drivers moving forward.

Welcome And The GLP-1 Question
SPEAKER_00What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to That's Delivered. I'm your host, Truck and Ray. You're here for another episode of our series QA with Truck and Ray. So I don't claim to know it all, I just want to learn about it all. And today's question is well, what's going on with GOP1 and trucking? Now, before everyone starts typing in the comments, no, this is not medical advice. This is not your doctor. I'm not your pharmaceutic. I'm just a truck driver asking the same questions a lot of other truck drivers are asking.
Truck Stop Food And New Habits
SPEAKER_00So a few years ago, if a truck driver walked into the truck stop and ordered three cheeseburgers, a large order of fries, two hot dogs, cinnamon rolls, and washed it all down with six, four ounces of soda. Nobody blinked. That was normal, right? Today, that same driver walks in and orders grilled chicken, bottled water, and people are whispering, is he on a GLP one?
Why GLP-1s Catch Driver Attention
SPEAKER_00You see, whether it's Ozempic, Wagovi, Mongero, or Zetbound, these medications were originally developed for diabetes, but they became well known for helping people lose weight. And truck drivers, well, we're paying attention because let's be honest, when your office is a chair that has air brakes and your commute is 600 miles, your refrigerator rides right behind your seat, staying healthy isn't always easy. So, truck drivers, we have our own version. We don't count steps, we count fuel stops, door, you know, dock doors, traffic jams, construction zones that we go through. And how many times are dispatch wants us to go back out again with another load?
Rumors Versus Real Medical Guidance
SPEAKER_00The average truck driver spends hours sitting. Sleeping schedules are just all over the place. Exercise can be difficult. Healthy food isn't always parked at exit, you know, up the street. And sometimes there's nothing there. And sometimes it's pizza, roller grilled food, or a hot dog that's been rotating longer than the driver had their CDL. So why are people talking about GLP1s? Well, many truck drivers want to lose weight. But lately people are asking bigger questions. Could these medications also help with inflammation, heart health, blood sugar, sleep, joint pain? Researchers are studying all of these areas, and some finding findings are promising. But there's still plenty we don't know. So the truck stop rumors, you know how truck stop conversations go. One driver says this medication changed my life. The next driver says, my cousin's barber neighbor tried it. Another guy is my dispatcher's on it. And suddenly everyone's a medical expert. But what's most important apart is yeah, if you're considering one of these medications, talk with your healthcare provider, especially as a CDL driver, make sure any medication works safely with your health, your medical certification, and your ability to safely operate the commercial vehicle. Don't take advice from Facebook comments, truck stop parking lots, or the guy wearing the flip-flops that's fueling. You know.
Health Talk As Preventive Maintenance
SPEAKER_00Bigger picture is, well, I actually think that what's interesting is it isn't just about the medication, it's the conversation. For years, truck drivers rarely talked openly about their health. Now, truck drivers are talking about it, talking about their weight, sleep, blood pressure, medical health, inflammation, exercise. You know, that's progress. Because taking care of ourselves isn't weakness, it's maintenance. It's like doing a 360, making sure we maintain the truck, tire pressure, brake inspections, and preventative maintenance. Maybe it's okay to invest in preventative maintenance for ourselves, too. So whether GOP ones are right for you or not, the goal is the same. Stay healthy enough and to keep doing what you love. And to make sure you make it home to the people that are waiting for you. Because at the end of the day, the most important delivery is you getting back home safely.
